Trauma & PTSD Therapy in Indianapolis | EMDR Therapy

Trauma can affect how you feel, think, relate to others, and move through everyday life—even when the experience happened years ago. You may feel constantly on alert, disconnected from yourself, overwhelmed by memories, or unsure why certain situations affect you so strongly.

Evermore Therapy & Wellness Group offers EMDR therapy and trauma counseling for adults and teens in Indianapolis and surrounding communities. Our trauma-informed therapists support people experiencing PTSD, anxiety, difficult life experiences, and the lasting effects of trauma, with online therapy available throughout Indiana.

Trauma does not always look the way people expect. It can develop after one overwhelming event or through repeated experiences that made it difficult to feel safe, supported, or in control.

You may be experiencing:

• Intrusive memories or flashbacks
• Anxiety, panic, or hypervigilance
• Nightmares or disrupted sleep
• Emotional numbness or disconnection
• Shame, guilt, or negative beliefs about yourself
• Difficulty trusting other people
• Avoidance of people, places, or situations
• Feeling easily startled, overwhelmed, or triggered
• Relationship difficulties following trauma
• Physical tension or feeling unsafe in your body
• Grief or traumatic loss
• Difficulty remembering parts of an experience

These reactions do not mean that you are broken. They may be ways your mind and body learned to protect you during or after overwhelming experiences.

Trauma & PTSD Concerns We Help With

Our trauma therapists work with adults, teens, and children who have experienced different forms of trauma and emotional distress, including:

• Childhood trauma
• Complex or repeated trauma
• Emotional, physical, or sexual abuse
• Relationship and attachment trauma
• Domestic violence
• Medical trauma
• Accidents or serious injuries
• Traumatic grief and loss
• Pregnancy, birth, or postpartum trauma
• Community violence
• Bullying or identity-based harm
• Distressing life events that continue to affect everyday functioning

You do not need to have a formal PTSD diagnosis—or consider your experience “bad enough”—to seek trauma therapy.

What Is EMDR Therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, commonly called EMDR, is a structured form of therapy used to help people process distressing memories and experiences.

During EMDR, a trained therapist helps you focus on aspects of a memory while engaging in bilateral stimulation. This may involve guided eye movements, alternating sounds, or gentle tapping. The goal is not to erase what happened. It is to help reduce the intensity of the emotions, physical reactions, and negative beliefs connected to the experience.

EMDR is not the right approach for every person or every stage of treatment. Your therapist will talk with you about your history, symptoms, readiness, and treatment goals before deciding whether EMDR may be appropriate.

What to Expect from Trauma Therapy

PTSD treatment and trauma therapy are individualized based on your symptoms, experiences, and goals. Trauma therapy should not require you to immediately describe every detail of what happened. Treatment begins by creating safety, understanding your concerns, and developing a plan that feels manageable.

Depending on your needs, trauma therapy may include:

• Learning how trauma affects the brain, body, and nervous system
• Identifying triggers and patterns
• Developing grounding and emotional-regulation skills
• Rebuilding a sense of safety and control
• Processing distressing memories when you are ready
• Addressing shame and negative beliefs
• Improving boundaries and relationship patterns
• Strengthening self-trust and connection
• Using EMDR when clinically appropriate

Your therapist will work collaboratively with you and adjust the pace of treatment based on your needs. You remain in control of what you share and what you are ready to address.

Is EMDR Right for Me?

EMDR may be worth exploring if distressing memories, triggers, emotions, or beliefs continue to interfere with your life. Some people seek EMDR after feeling stuck in traditional talk therapy, while others use it as one component of a broader trauma-treatment plan.

Before beginning EMDR processing, your therapist will evaluate whether you have the coping skills and stability needed to participate safely. Preparation may take more or less time depending on the person. Asking about EMDR does not commit you to using it.

Trauma-Informed Therapists Who Understand the Importance of Safety

Finding the right trauma therapist involves more than choosing a treatment technique. Trust, communication style, experience, identity, personality, and your sense of safety with the therapist all matter.

Because not every Evermore therapist provides EMDR, our administrative team will help connect you with an appropriately trained clinician. Jamie Hill, LCSW, and Tessa Duncan are EMDR-certified therapists who provide trauma-focused care through Evermore.
